Population ageing, viewed as an almost universal and irreversible phenomenon, is changing family structures. The economic concern of ageing is on how it would affect worker's career programme and social security issues. The social concern is how it effects family relationships, particularly care for the elderly. This report presents a summary of the discussion papers and recommendations of fifty international experts on such demographic issues as: changes in marital status, patterns on migrations, changing status of roles of the elderly, evolving family structures and inter-family transfers of assets. Also included are residential issues of the effect of ageing families on housing conditions and policies and programmes to promote family care.
