Theory, Practice and Annotated References

Format *
The purpose of this publication is to review the literature on water disputes and related water treaties to acquire an understanding of why previous and current disputes over water have occurred and to seek lessons to be learned in preventing similar future disputes. The publication focuses on transboundary freshwater, on the political and social aspects, and on the skills for dispute resolution. Transboundary Freshwater Dispute Resolution presents a survey of international watersheds, providing some bibliographical and general data collected from over 200 transboundary watersheds. A subset of case studies from the exhaustive list of international watersheds presented, is examined in greater detail. Moreover a compilation and analysis of relevant water treaties, and the rationale for their partial implementation is included. The publication is one of the few comprehensive and interdisciplinary analyses of such international surface water conflicts ever published.
