Privatization

A Panacea or a Palliative

Format *
Over the past couple of decades, privatization has featured prominently on the agenda of reforms in most developing countries. Yet its economic consequences have not been adequately researched. This volume reviews the existing literature with a focus on the impact of privatization on economic efficiency, employment, equity and the government budget. It also seeks to identify the preconditions, which need to be satisfied in order for privatization to be efficient. It is hoped that lessons drawn from the review of experiences in a wide range of countries will be of assistance to policy makers about to embark upon major privatization programmes.
