While the natural resources of this part of the Middle East have supported the coastal populations for thousands of years, the marine environment has recently been degraded as a result of a wide range of land-based sources and activities. UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), commissioned the present report on land-based sources and activities affecting the marine environment of each Member State of the ROPME sea area - Bahrain, Iraq, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
