Mapping of Risk Areas of Environmentally-Induced Migration in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)

Format *
This publication analyzes high-risk areas of environmentally induced population displacement in the CIS. Shedding light on the relatively new field of ecological migration, it focuses on areas affected by environmental degradation, including the Chernobyl region, the Ural zone of radioactive pollution, the Caspian coastal territory and the dried-up Aral Sea region. The report highlights the likelihood of a rapid increase in the number of migrants if environmental conditions continue to deteriorate in ecologically fragile zones, and recommends preventive measures for protecting the environment, developing social infrastructure and broadening the legal protection of ecological migrants.
