This report presents the GIWA assessment of the Caspian Sea – the largest land-locked water body on earth, bordered by five countries and influenced by three more in the catchment area. The assessment of the current situation and historical trends identified that Habitat and community modification exerts the greatest impact on the ecosystem of the Caspian Sea. Policy options to address the driving forces is presented and discussed in the context of current practices in the region.
