Guidelines for the Integrated Management of the Watershed

Phytotechnology and Ecohydrology

Format *
The concept of Ecohydrology and its scientific foundations were developed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). They are based on the manipulation of biota, landscape and hydrology so that they may augment the ecosystem’s resilience to change, while at the same time creating opportunities for interaction. Phytotechnologies on the other hand, are based on the use of vegetation and when used in conjunction with Ecohydrology preserve the soil and landscape and prevent pollution. This publication explains the complementary use of Ecohydrology and Phytotechnologies and similar concepts in water resource management. A joint effort of United Nations Environment Protection Programme (UNEP) and UNESCO’s Regional Bureau for Science in Europe (ROSTE), the guidelines included in this publication have been developed to assist decision makers, technical experts and scientists alike to manage the watershed and related water bodies.
