Accession of Central European Countries to the European Union, The

The Trade and Investment Effects on Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine

Format *
The continued growth of the European Union (EU) will have important economic consequences both for the EU member states and for their trading partners, especially those at the new borders of the enlarged EU. This paper assesses some of these consequences, focusing on four acceding central European countries (CE-4 - that is Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) and three CIS economies bordering the enlarged EU (CIS-3, namely, Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine). In particular, it seeks to estimate how trade between the CE-4 and the CIS-3 will be affected by enlargement of the EU and what will be the likely consequences for the flow of foreign direct investment into the latter.
