This study examines the technical assistance needed by developing countries in order to conform to technical regulations and measures stipulated by export markets. It provides background information on the objectives and rules of the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) and the agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS). It also draws upon the experiences of selected developing countries to identify their needs for technical assistance and to examine the development of their own standardized and conformity assessment systems.
