On June 29, 1998, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, made the announcement that, at the invitation of the Government of Algeria, he had established a panel of eminent persons to visit that country. The purpose of the visit was to gather information on the situation in Algeria. This publication presents the report from the panel to the Secretary-General. Information provided covers such areas as: the democratization and overall governmental structure; economic and social problems; terrorism; human rights and fundamental freedoms; the media; diversity; women; and children.
