East and South-East Asian economies have been acclaimed worldwide for maintaining a remarkably fast pace of economic growth over the past several years. Increasingly, it is being recognized that sustaining that pace of requires deregulation and liberalization of the financial sector. Progress, in this respect, has been extremely uneven. This publication reviews the experiences of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Republic of Korea and Thailand, in their reform efforts towards liberalization. It focuses on foreign exchange control and the exchange rate policy; monetary and credit policies; institutional developments; and capital markets.
