About the product

This study traces the small-scale labour-intensive industries in Japan from the Meiji period (1868-1912) up to World War II. With numerous case studies of the shell-button, brush, knit fabric and bicycle industries, the study shows how each industry was established and developed. Analysis of the social role of each industry in the internal and international economic and political context is presented along with information showing the sometimes harsh relations among merchants, manufacturers and workers.
