This document describes the main social, economic, political and demographic features of Latin America and the Caribbean in the last 10 years as a backdrop to the implementation in the region of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development agreed in Cairo in 1994. Following this description is a detailed account of the actions undertaken by the countries in the region to put it into practice. Attention is drawn to the joint efforts made by the Government, civil society and the private sector and a brief description is given of the resources used in this task. Lastly, the authors identify the outstanding issues and future challenges posed by implementation of the Programme of Action in the region.
