K-Content Goes Global

How Government Support and Copyright Policy Fuelled the Republic of Korea's Creative Economy

This research presents an illustrative case how the government’s support and copyright policy accelerated the country’s content-based industry boom. Specifically, the case of Korea serves as an inspiration to other developing countries that seek to develop their creative industries. As well, it provides a good practice example of the role of government in supporting industrial development and in synergizing inter-industry linkages through policy development. Thus the approaches the topic of creative economy and industries through the lens of trade and development. In addition, the publication raises a contemporary trade issue on how to facilitate trade in digitally deliverable services during the digital era. It illustrates how new types of business such as intellectual-based licensing products or services have emerged, and how they have expanded and converged with other cultural industries such as tourism. Also, the publication is strongly linked to the important role of intellectual properties for the development of creative economy by means of presenting how copyright policy of Korea contributed to incentivising creators and protecting copyrighted works.
