This publication illustrates how safety requirements in the field of biotechnology can sometimes take the form of trade measures when they create a restriction on trade to protect the environment and/or human health from the potential adverse effects of biotechnology products. The publication highlights the issue of biotechnology and the need for safety in the field. It identifies types of Trade Related Environmental Measures (TREMs) linked to safety in biotechnology and describes the interaction between TREMs and GATT/WTO (General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs / World Trade Organization) rules.
