Women's rights have traditionally been viewed as separate from human rights. Yet, throughout their lifetime, women are often faced with violations of their human rights. To address those issues, an Expert Group Meeting was organized to review the progress achieved in the Asia and the Pacific region in treating women's rights as human rights, and to formulate recommendations on women's legal rights and the elimination of violence against women. This publication contains the report, recommendations and background papers presented by the participants at the meeting. It is hoped that the publication will enable women to discuss the problems and to share positive developments in order to achieve equal legal status in their civil and private lives.
