The Economic and Social Commission of Western Asia (ESCWA) presents this annual review of economic and social trends in the region. This issue corresponds to the 25th Anniversary of the Commission and presents a survey of the economic and social developments in the region for the past 25 years (l974-l999) with special emphasis being placed on 1998 and including the prospects for 1999. The countries included in the survey are: Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
