The dynamic economic, trade and tourism development in the Asian and Pacific region has increased the demand for reliable and efficient land transport linkages and services. As a result, the role of the Asian Highway (AH) can play in assisting international trade and tourism has gained recognition. This publication presents a discussion on the history and status of the AH, regional development needs, promotion of the AH and tourism development. Country studies relating the the highways impact, are presented for the following countries: Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand and Viet Nam.
