This publication examines the management of employment issues in the area of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Transnational Corporations (TNCs). It provides an analysis of the coverage of international instruments concerning five main areas of TNC-related issues: employment promotion, opportunity and security of employment, human resources development, conditions of work, and life and industrial relations. Employment also examines the extent to which international investment agreements (IIAs) have paid attention to emerging issues, such as the possible expansion of the scope of core labour standards to TNCs and the possible utilization of a social clause. The publication is a part of series promoted by UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) to address key issues relevant to IIAs and to present them in a manner that is easily accessible to end-users.
