Progress, Good Practices and Lessons Learned, Challenges and Opportunities in the Application of Traditional Knowledge, Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and Local Knowledge Systems in Adaptation

Format *
Recognizing the importance of integrating diverse knowledge systems in adaptation responses, and in order to support Parties in this endeavor, members of the Adaptation Committee’s Taskforce on National Adaptation Plans (NAP Taskforce) decided to prepare this policy brief to provide information on good practices, lessons learned, challenges and opportunities in the application of traditional knowledge, knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and local knowledge systems (TILKS) in adaptation. This is aimed to inform practitioners and policymakers in their adaptation planning and implementation efforts, as well as constituted bodies under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement, and other key stakeholders to further incorporate these knowledge systems into their work. As detailed in this brief, TILKS can meaningfully contribute to adaptation efforts, including as a source of information on climate change impacts, as well as on viable adaptation options which are locally appropriate, socio-culturally responsive, sustainable, resilient, adaptable and cost-efficient. Integrating TIKLS with scientific knowledge, mainstream solutions and new technologies can increase the effectiveness of adaptation efforts. It is important to highlight that the use of TILKS needs to be implemented with the ethical and equitable engagement of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
