UNDP Poverty Report

Overcoming Human Poverty

Format *
The launch of Overcoming Human Poverty, precedes the five-year review of progress against poverty that will be soon conducted by the United Nations General Assembly, following the 1995 World Summit for Social Development. This publication reveals that progress has been minor, and that the number of income-poor in the developing world is again on the rise after having declined until 1996. The Poverty Report 2000 highlights the need for a newglobal strategy against poverty, with more resources, a sharper focus and a stronger comm itment. It also calls on the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), to provide better assistance to developing countries, by focusing on helping to improve national policy-making and less dispersed among a myriad of small-scale projects. Overcoming Human Poverty has made a special effort to assess a broad range of national poverty programmes, to find out what is working and what is not, and to draw out general lessons for better policies. Numerous statistical tables accompany the Report.
