Sustainability of Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, The

Challenges and Opportunities

Format *
This document is adopted from The Latin America and Caribbean Regional Preparatory Conference for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in Rio de Janeiro in October 2001. It seeks to present an overview of the progress made towards sustainable development since the Earth summit and an assessment of the challenges and opportunities that should be taken into account with a view to the adoption of future measures. The following areas are examined in this document: regional economic performance; the main trends in social development in the 1990s; population dynamics and the challenges they pose to governments and society; the environmental situation in the region from the point of view of natural ecosystems; the development of environmental and sustainable development policies with regard to the institutional framework. The final part of the document presents proposals for action in terms of sustainable development. It also proposes what role the region might play in a global alliance within the framework of the region’s own agenda and the global agenda. Tables, figures and boxes are included.
