About the product

The rapid pace of development in the Asia and the Pacific region had been accompanied by widespread over-exploitation of environmental resources and by more frequent and severe instances of acute pollution. Focusing on the theme of sustainable development, this publication reports on the environmental situation of the region. Emphasis is placed on the physical environment; the ecosystems; the cause and effect relationship between development and environment; and trends, both in the region as a whole and in the sub-regions. It also evaluates the social, economic and environmental factors that determine sustainability. In addition, the publication highlights the major areas of concern and the principal challenges and issues for action by Governments, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations and private enterprises in the region.
