The role of economic instruments in environmental policies has increased during the last decade and it is clear that this increase will continue. This publication assesses the different types of experiences encountered by countries in the European region. Some areas of focus include: mixing economic instruments with other regulations or voluntary agreements; the opportunities for an increased use of environmental taxes and charges; and the use of economic instruments in European Transition economies. Case studies are presented on such countries as: the Czech Republic, the Russian Federation, Slovenia, Hungary, France and the Republic of Moldova.
