SouthEast Asia has long experienced droughts. The severity and impacts of two drought events during 2015-2016 and 2018 2020 exceed anything recorded in the past two decades. This report presents an assessment of the droughts in the past five years with a focus on their climatic drivers and socio economic impacts. It combines merged rainfall datasets and a series of new subnational datasets, including on drought exposure, Human Development Index, and Demographic Health Survey data on wealth,agriculture,and malnutrition, to locate the populations most vulnerable to recurrent droughts. It presents projections of the changing drought risk under climate change.
