The railway sector all over the world has changed dramatically in the last decade, in terms of economic restructuring as well as environmental and social issues. This review shows that, even though rail is in most respects the transport mode with the best environmental performance, the railways are by no means resting on their laurels. A common feature of the last decade’s most successful initiatives in the rail sector, is the co-operation between stakeholders both inside and outside the sector. In the process, the railways have built on their advantages in energy efficiency, low emissions, safety, and the use of space, making mobility easier and more sustainable.
