About the product

During the next half century, population profiles in the Asian and Pacific region will be altered significantly as older persons in most countries become an increasingly large segment of the overall population. Improved nutrition and health care are decreasing mortality rates while the size of younger age groups is shrinking due to falling birth rates. Although population ageing will occur worldwide, it is expected to take place at a faster pace in Asia than in developed countries. This publication discusses some related issues: population ageing and development; multigenerational relationships; and the report of the regional seminar on Promoting a Society for All Ages held in Bangkok in December 1998.
