Preliminary Overview of the Economies of Latin America and the Caribbean 1998

Format *
The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean have faced an extraordinary degree of volatility in both the financial and trade sectors in 1998. The Asian financial crisis restricted the region's access to external financing and tumbling export prices resulted in the drop in value of the countries' exports. The 1998 events also included adverse weather conditions in the form of El Niño and a series of hurricanes. In view of these upheavals, this publication reports that the economies of Latin America and the Caribbean performed reasonably well. The publication presents an overview of the economies, on a country by country basis of the Latin America and the Caribbean region.
