The Macrothesaurus is produced jointly by the United Nations and the Organization for Economic Cooperation for Development (OECD) and is a multidisciplinary vocabulary for the indexing, classification, retrieval and exchange of information in the broad field of economic and social development. The format of the descriptors and the structure of the Thesaurus follow the recommendations of set international standards. This fifth edition of the Macrothesaurus contains 5174 descriptors and 2057 non-descriptors which include 446 new English, French and Spanish descriptors. For easy referencing, the descriptors are presented in four sections: alphabetical; descriptor group which includes the subject group and the descriptor group; hierarchial display; and permuted index.
