Based on information gathered through national surveys and other sources, this study provides an overview of the main legal instruments at both international and national levels, including the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The European Union regulatory framework is presented as an example of an integrated regional legal framework. The study assesses the status of national regulatory frameworks and gives recommendations for the development of national legislation.
