As called for in Agenda 21, the road transport industry, under the leadership of the International Road Transport Union (IRU), developed the IRU Charter for Sustainable Development, which was unanimously adopted by all IRU members at its World Congress in 1996. This study helps to communicate to the public the vital role of road transport in modern society, and provides goals for implementing sustainable development at transport operator level.
