After several decades of unprecedented economic and industrial growth in certain East and South-East Asian economies, a phenomenon often called the 'East Asian economic miracle' came to an abrupt end in mid-1997 with the collapse of the Thai currency, the buht. This publication reviews the events and factors, which caused the crisis, focusing on three countries - Indonesia, the Republic of Korea and Thailand, and evaluates the implications of the crisis for the industrial and technological development in these countries and the Asia-Pacific region as a whole.
