About the product

The United Nations has long been a strong supporter of applying computer technology solutions where they prove to be of real benefit in assisting governments to meet the challenges of the 20th Century. One such technology, described in this publication, is geographic information systems (GIS) which combines automated mapping and technical facilities management through a graphical computer interface. The electric utility sector is ideally suited to application of GIS technology as its operation is predominately based on physical assets covering a wide geographic area. This report provides an overview of GIS technology describing its application in the electric utility industry, technology trends and their impact on the feasibility of implementing GIS and a case study of a GIS system in Egypt.
