This study, by a group of Japanese business and economic historians, contributes to a better understanding of technological development in Japan generally and more particularly, of the specific character of the Japanese general trading company and its role in that development. Comparisons are made with similar trading firms in Great Britain and the United States. Discussions focus on aspects of management, merchandise and organizations structures. A detailed study of Japan's largest general trading company, Mitsui Bussan, is also featured.
