About the product

The authors analyze systems designed to integrate, intensify and increase food and energy production by transforming the by-products of one system into the feedstock of another. Strategies to increase access of the urban poor to food and energy by means of new, resource-saving, employment generating urban development are described. It is emphasized that sustainable development can only be effected based on respect for the environment and that a new rural-urban configuration in the third world could be achieved based on decentralized industrialization, waste reduction and utilization of biotechnology.
