Contribution of Tourism to Poverty Alleviation, The

It is now recognized that tourism can contribute to poverty alleviation through job creation and productive employment. Tax revenue derived from tourism activities can be used to improve education, health and infrastructure development, all of which are important for poverty alleviation. Culture and tradition can be revitalized and the natural environment can be preserved through appropriate and sustainable tourism development. This publication summarizes the papers presented by country representatives attending the “Seminar on Poverty Alleviation through Sustainable Tourism Development” and two concept papers prepared by experts on the topic of tourism development and poverty alleviation.
