“Cities of Opportunity: Partnerships for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future” presents the outcomes of the Fifth Asia-Pacific Urban Forum, organized by ESCAP and partners from 20-25 June 2011 in Bangkok, Thailand. The report gives an overview of current thinking on inclusive and sustainable urban development and how innovative financing and governance approaches can contribute to that. It highlights the role that social movements play in changing Asian cities for the better. Papers written by eminent urban experts outline urban challenges specific to five sub-regions: North and North-East Asia, South-East Asia, South and South-West Asia, North and Central Asia and the Pacific. Summaries of break-out sessions organized by ESCAP’s partners go in depth on specific aspects of urban development, including urban planning, infrastructure, alternative financing mechanisms and housing.
