Aarhus Convention, The

An Implementation Guide

Format *
The purpose of this publication is to explain and clarify the Aarhus Convention - Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters - and thereby help to involve citizens more effectively in the crucial collective search for sustainable development. The Aarhus Convention, which was adopted in 1998, is a new kind of environmental agreement, linking environmental rights and human rights. It acknowledges that we owe an obligation to future generations, links government accountability and environmental protection and forges a new process for public participation in the negotiation and implementation of international agreements. The publication provides both a general overview and a detailed article-by-article analysis of the Convention. The Guide is commendable to all those with an interest in the Convention, policy makers and legislators, officials at all levels of government, academics and Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs).
