Throughout the Asia-Pacific region, the ultimate aim of development planners is to improve the quality of life of people. However, the questions normally asked include: what is the term 'quality of life' and how can it be measured? Through country case studies conducted in the ESCAP region, this publication presents an analytical examination of the 'quality of life' in the Asia-Pacific region. In the process it identifies various quantitative and qualitative gaps in the information required to reach a considered estimation of the quality of life in the region. The study considers such areas as health, education, working life, physical environment, family life, community life, cultural and spiritual life, poverty and the provision of social services.
