Since 1989 Viet Nam has been undergoing a gradual transition from a centrally planned socialist to a market-oriented economy. The country has gone from being a rice importer to being the second largest rice exporter in the world. The growth in rice production and rice exports has had a positive impact on poverty reduction but has had a number of adverse environmental and social impacts as well. This Integrated Assessment is very important since it provides the basis for formulating appropriate measures to mitigate the negative impacts and promote the positive ones.
