In recent years, many voices have sounded the alert that HIV infection is spreading widely and rapidly in the former Soviet Union and Central Asia. According to official HIV registries, most infection in these countries is due to injecting drug use (IDU), heroin in particular. However, very little information on the exact level of IDU is readily available. As a result, an audit report on IDU in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia was requested, resulting in this book.
