This paper attempts to define the positive and negative effects of trade liberalization on the banana industry in Ecuador following, the implementation of the governments structural adjustment policy between 1980 and 1999. It also examines the impact of international trade policies on the economy during the same period. These studies are carried out with an objective of steering Ecuadorian policy making towards policies that will lead to sustainable development, increased competitiveness, as well as economic, social and environmental responsibility.
