About the product

There has been an increased interest and concern over the potential positive and negative impacts of trade liberalization, particularly on the environment and social fabric of developing countries where trade has grown most rapidly. This document synthesizes and summarizes studies in six countries commissioned by the United Nations Environment Protection Agency (UNEP). It evaluates UNEP’s work with national institutions in Argentina, China, Ecuador, Nigeria, Senegal and Tanzania to identify the environmental, social, and to a certain extent economic effects of trade liberalization in these countries. The studies focus on trade-related environmental problems and their social and economic implications as they apply to diverse economic sectors.
