About the product

This publication is a brief overview of the background, structure, issues and strategy adopted by the 1999 conference for the utilization of space science and technology to address global issues. It calls for specific actions, and describes issues and concerns related to six themes: protecting the Earth environment and managing its resources; using space applications for human security, development and welfare; advancing scientific knowledge of space and protecting the space environment; enhancing education and training and increasing public awareness of the importance of space activities; strengthening and repositioning space activities in the United Nations system; and promoting international cooperation. The recommendations outlined in the publication are the result of collaboration and discussions by governments, and for the first time by civil society representatives, including private sector.
