This issue tackles cyberspace legislation and its role in strengthening confidence in electronic services. It contains an overview of the status of cyberspace legislation in the ESCWA region underlining its shortcomings and available means for addressing them. It also reviews the progress achieved in developing cyberspace legislation through pilot laws and legislations prepared by the Arab Centre for Legal and Judicial Research of the League of Arab States to serve as a basis for Arab countries in enacting their national laws. This issue also contains articles on existing opportunities for improving Internet access, the efforts at registering the generic Top Level Domain and its equivalent ".arab", the free space optical communications technology and the method for building secure local communications networks. This issue also presents the ICT activities implemented by ESCWA during the first half of 2009 and the ICT impact on daily life.
